Girls’ Magazine Reading and Attitudes of Early Adolescent Girls (Petra Filkuková)

Despite worldwide popularity of girls’ magazines, research on their effects has so far been scarce. This article provides an overview of history of the periodicals and discusses their potential impact. In the empirical part, the author presents findings of an exploratory study on girls’ magazine reading in the Czech Republic. The quantitative part of the study focused on comparison of heavy and light girls’ magazine readers in three main fields of interest:
1) attitudes to own body
2) attitudes to partner relationships
3) values that they consider important for their life
The qualitative part of the study intended to shed more light on meanings which girls’ magazines carry to their readers. The findings of the research suggest that girls’ magazines are powerful at least in strengthening, if not creating, certain attitudes, values, and norms in their readers.
