I Want Every Part!” Sexuality and Gender in Twilight and Vampire Diaries (Marion Rana)

Most current research on the Twilight series concentrates on the gender conformative parts of the novels, hihglighting Bella's role as subservient and helpless damsel in distress in need of her Byronic hero Edward. While the novels are in fact highly regressive in their treatment of sexuality and in their gender role allocation, the text also offers important ambiguities and in-between-spaces of (sexual) agency that contradict the overall (gender) conservative message of the series. This article will highlight these ambivalences and ambiguities and compare them with the Vampire Diaries serie, arguing for the latter being much more traditional and sexually regressive than a surface reading might suggest.
